These luminaries are part of the fast-growing health technology AKA healthtech space. Healthtech companies provide mobility and other information technologies to improve healthcare delivery while decreasing costs. Startups in this space—of which PitchBook tracks 20,000+—often have crossover into sectors like cloud computing, internet services, and social mobility to optimize patient-center healthcare. Others have also noted the difference. Fellow cohort member, Erica Plybeah, founder and CEO of MedHaul, which offers healthcare providers an easier way to book non-emergency transportation for patients with special needs, says that the heightened awareness of racial inequality has led to more interest from well-known investors, the sort her startup hadn’t attracted in the past. Yet, she remains cautious. It may be too early to tell if that sort of outreach proves beneficial, she says, adding: “Raising money is a much longer journey than a week or two, at least for most Black entrepreneurs.” ‘Representation and autonomy’ An 8(a) small business is any business where the owner(s) is socially and economically disadvantaged. Research shows Black-led businesses face ongoing systemic challenges, including inequitable access to funding, personal development and mentorship opportunities. These challenges pose greater barriers to entry and success for underrepresented founders in the startup community. The De La Soul Catalog is Thriving, But Where’s The “Buddy” Remix? The report further said startups founded by HDPs face greater pre- and post-revenue funding barriers when compared to those by white entrepreneurs. They also experience greater challenges when joining major B2C sites.
